COMMITTEE

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) stands as the primary organ tasked with the maintenance of international peace and security. Established in 1945 under the UN Charter, the UNSC embodies the collective responsibility of the international community to address threats to peace and respond to conflicts around the globe. Comprising fifteen member states, including five permanent members with veto power—China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States—the UNSC holds a central position in the multilateral system, wielding authority to enforce resolutions, impose sanctions, authorize peacekeeping missions, and engage in diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving crises.

BACKGROUND -

Boko Haram, an extremist militant group based primarily in northeastern Nigeria, has been a source of profound humanitarian concern and security threats in the region and beyond. Since its emergence in the early 2000s, Boko Haram has perpetrated a wide range of atrocities, including indiscriminate attacks on civilians, mass abductions, suicide bombings, and the destruction of infrastructure. The group's name, which roughly translates to "Western education is forbidden," reflects its opposition to secular education and its broader goal of establishing an Islamic state governed by Sharia law in Nigeria. Boko Haram's actions have resulted in widespread displacement, loss of life, and profound suffering, particularly among vulnerable populations, including women and children.

In response to the escalating threat posed by Boko Haram, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has taken various measures to address the crisis and mitigate its impact on peace and security in the region. These measures have included the imposition of targeted sanctions against individuals and entities affiliated with Boko Haram, as well as the adoption of resolutions aimed at enhancing regional cooperation, capacity-building, and counterterrorism efforts.

Additionally, the UNSC has authorized the deployment of peacekeeping missions, such as the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), composed of troops from affected countries in the Lake Chad Basin region, to combat Boko Haram and restore stability to areas affected by its activities. Despite these efforts, the threat posed by Boko Haram remains a pressing challenge, underscoring the need for sustained international cooperation and comprehensive approaches addressing the root causes of extremism and instability in the region.
